Microsoft's Azure DevOps MCP Server Goes Live, But Major AI Assistants Still Can't Access It
A new hosted gateway gives AI tools direct access to Azure DevOps—yet Claude, ChatGPT, and Cursor remain locked out pending Microsoft authentication changes.
InfoQ
Microsoft has launched its Azure DevOps Remote MCP Server into general availability, offering AI assistants a cloud-hosted interface to work items, pull requests, repositories, and CI/CD pipelines—with no local installation required. However, the rollout masks a significant constraint: Claude Desktop, Claude Code, ChatGPT, and Cursor cannot yet connect, and the bottleneck lies inside Microsoft's own identity infrastructure, not in those platforms.
How It Works#
The service operates as an HTTP endpoint at https://mcp.dev.azure.com/{organization} and requires only a single configuration entry in a client's mcp.json file to get started. Authentication flows through Microsoft Entra ID, and full setup details are available in the official documentation.
The Authentication Roadblock#
The real limitation stems from Entra's current capabilities. According to Dan Hellem, product manager for Azure Boards, Repos, and Wiki, the popular third-party AI agents need either dynamic OAuth client registration or Client ID Metadata Documents support in Entra before they can authenticate. Microsoft says it is collaborating with the Entra team to unlock this capability, but no timeline has been announced.
The timing compounds the problem. The MCP specification updated on July 28, 2026—just a week before this GA—shifted its preference ordering for these very authentication mechanisms. The spec now prioritizes pre-registered clients and Client ID Metadata Documents, while relegating Dynamic Client Registration to a deprecated fallback scheduled for removal after summer 2027. Entra currently supports neither of the two methods the latest spec favors.
A secondary constraint is permanent: organizations must be backed by an Entra tenant, meaning standalone setups using Microsoft personal accounts are unsupported.
Microsoft's Own Clients Get Immediate Access#
First-party tools already work seamlessly: Visual Studio Code with GitHub Copilot, Microsoft Foundry, Copilot Studios, Visual Studio, the GitHub Copilot CLI, and the GitHub Copilot app all connect without additional setup.
