Apple's Price Hikes Shift AI Costs to Consumers Despite Record Profits
Tech companies are raising prices on consumer hardware to offset soaring AI infrastructure costs—but Apple and rivals have the margins to absorb them.
The Verge
Tim Cook recently blamed "unavoidable" price increases on the AI industry's memory demands. Apple's MacBook Pro jumped $300, the iPad Air rose to $749, and even the HomePod Mini climbed $30. Across tech, the squeeze is real: the Xbox is up nearly 25 percent, and Nothing canceled a phone launch entirely.
The Memory War#
The culprit is real: AI companies like OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft are outbidding consumer device makers for scarce RAM and storage chips. "The price of RAM has skyrocketed because memory manufacturers have reallocated production lines to create HBM memory for AI data centers," says Tim Derdenger of Carnegie Mellon's Tepper School. More troubling, companies profit far more from data center chips than consumer ones, creating a structural shift—not a temporary shortage.
Memory manufacturers like Micron are posting record earnings. Srikanth Jagabathula at NYU Stern warns: "This shortage is not temporary and might extend into the next few years." That makes cost-absorption harder, he argues. But Apple has posted record earnings for four consecutive quarters and maintains margins between 30–47 percent on products, versus the industry standard of 15–25 percent for smartphones and 10–25 percent for laptops.
The Shareholder Story#
Ari Lightman at Carnegie Mellon calls it "hard to square" Apple's claims of unsustainable pricing with its financial strength. Price hikes, he argues, are really about keeping investors happy. "If they're going to be promoting the stock to large institutional investors … they have to tell a really good story"—one of soaring margins even amid rising costs.
Apple also faces pressure: it's lagging in AI, installing a new CEO, and lacks a breakthrough product. Squeezing margins helps offset that uncertainty to Wall Street.
