A fourth plaintiff has added her name to an ongoing legal challenge mounted against Elon Musk's xAI, alleging the company's Grok chatbot facilitated the creation of child sexual abuse material. The woman, identified in court documents as Jane Doe 4, describes a deeply disturbing case of misuse of the AI tool.
The Alleged Abuse#
According to reporting from The Washington Post, the woman claims her stepfather exploited Grok to digitally manipulate a photograph of her taken at age 11, ultimately generating more than 7,000 sexually explicit images. She revealed that her stepfather died by suicide two days after authorities discovered the images during a law enforcement operation.
"Limitless access to these tools is spreading so quickly," she told reporters. "It is taking everyday life and turning it into child sexual abuse."
Growing Legal Action#
The new complaint joins a class-action lawsuit initially filed by three Tennessee teenagers against xAI, now operating as a SpaceX division. The original plaintiffs contend that xAI failed to implement adequate safeguards preventing the system from generating non-consensual intimate imagery of real individuals, including children. The teenagers are seeking class-action certification.
A Broader Pattern#
The allegations come as xAI grapples with wider concerns about content moderation. Earlier this year, X was inundated with millions of sexually explicit images allegedly created using Grok, bringing scrutiny to the platform's content policies and enforcement practices.
TechCrunch has asked xAI to respond to the allegations but has not yet received a statement.
