TechCrunch Disrupt 2026 Launches Real World AI Track With Focus on Robots, Defense Tech, and De-Extinction
The flagship tech conference is doubling down on physical AI with a new stage dedicated to autonomous systems moving beyond labs into military, industrial, and biological applications.
TechCrunch — AI
TechCrunch Disrupt is adding a dedicated track this fall to explore how artificial intelligence is materializing beyond screens and into the physical world. The inaugural Real World AI Stage will run alongside the existing AI programming at the San Francisco conference from October 13–15, reflecting how rapidly autonomous hardware and embodied intelligence are evolving.
The new stage signals a shift in how the industry views AI's next frontier. While large language models dominated recent years, robotics, defense systems, and biotech companies are now grappling with questions about deploying AI when failure carries real-world consequences — from vehicle crashes to biological engineering.
The Sessions and Speakers#
The Real World AI Stage lineup tackles five core challenges facing companies building AI that operates in physical space:
Data scarcity for robots: Nvidia's Head of Physical AI, Les Karpas, will join a session examining why general-purpose robotics remains years away despite rapid progress elsewhere in AI. The core bottleneck is data — while language models had the internet and autonomous vehicles have millions of hours of driving footage, robots lack comparable training datasets.
Safety and deployment: Shield AI's CTO Nate Michael will discuss how founders building autonomous vehicles and defense systems determine when an AI system is ready for real-world use, touching on safety culture, validation testing, and regulatory navigation.
De-extinction and biological engineering: Ben Lamm, CEO of Colossal Biosciences, will explore how artificial intelligence powers efforts to revive extinct species and the ongoing debate over whether engineering nature constitutes genuine conservation or a distraction from protecting existing ecosystems.
Edge computing constraints: Leaders from FieldAI, Medra, and Eclipse Ventures will examine AI deployment where cloud connectivity is unavailable — a reality for defense, space, and industrial applications where latency and reliability are non-negotiable.
Scaling production: Founders from MBRYONICS, Bedrock Robotics, and Foxglove will share lessons from moving hardware prototypes into manufacturing and profitable volume, highlighting where deep tech startups typically founder.
A Broader Conference#
The Real World AI Stage joins five other programming tracks, including the original AI Stage (focused on security gaps and SaaS), the Disrupt Stage, the Smart Money Stage (financial systems and stablecoins), the Smart Systems Stage (fusion energy), and the Builders Stage. , which expects more than 10,000 founders, technologists, and investors.
