ThreadWeaver Brings Parallel Reasoning to Language Models Without Accuracy Loss
A new framework trains LLMs to reason across multiple threads in parallel while maintaining reasoning accuracy and cutting inference time by up to 53%.
Researchers have introduced ThreadWeaver, a system designed to speed up the reasoning process in large language models by enabling parallel computation without sacrificing accuracy. The approach tackles a longstanding tension in AI: scaling up computation at inference time improves reasoning capability, but sequential decoding creates unacceptable latency costs.
The Core Problem#
Large language models reason through sequential steps—generating one token after another—which is inherently slow. While increasing computation time during inference has proven effective for complex reasoning tasks, the purely sequential nature of generation creates a computational bottleneck. Existing parallel reasoning methods have struggled to maintain performance parity with sequential models, often requiring specialized and expensive inference hardware.
How ThreadWeaver Works#
The framework introduces three key components that enable efficient parallel reasoning:
- Parallel trajectory generation: A two-stage process that creates high-quality chain-of-thought data suitable for parallel reasoning, used to fine-tune models via supervised learning.
- Trie-based rollout: An architecture that enables parallel reasoning to run on standard autoregressive inference engines, eliminating the need for specialized hardware.
- Parallelization-aware reinforcement learning: A training approach that teaches models to optimize both reasoning accuracy and effective parallelization simultaneously, balancing correctness with speed gains.
Competitive Results#
When applied to the Qwen3-8B model and evaluated across six mathematical reasoning benchmarks, ThreadWeaver achieved performance metrics on par with much larger sequential reasoning models. The system reached 79.9% accuracy on AIME24 and 71.9% average performance while delivering 1.53x speedup in token latency—effectively cutting inference time by up to 53%.
This performance positions ThreadWeaver at a new efficiency frontier, matching the reasoning quality of contemporary sequential approaches while substantially reducing the computational wall-clock time required to generate answers.
