Anthropic's Dario Amodei to dine with Trump as AI safety debate heats up
The AI safety advocate and president sit down for their first one-on-one meeting amid a fundamental disagreement over how to approach the technology's development.

Anthropic's leader Dario Amodei will meet with President Donald Trump at the White House this evening, marking the pair's first direct conversation as tensions escalate over the future direction of artificial intelligence.
The dinner comes just hours after Amodei appeared on Saturday Night Live's season premiere, and signals a potential shift in dialogue between the tech executive and the administration on one of the year's most contentious issues.
A clash of visions on AI development#
The two men have staked out starkly opposing positions on how the world should approach AI advancement. Amodei has championed a measured strategy, recently presenting a framework to temper the pace of AI progress and build in greater precautions as the technology evolves. Trump, by contrast, has dismissed concerns about rapid AI development, claiming without substantiation that worries about AI represent a Democratic-driven narrative. He has also pushed for reframing AI under the banner of "super intelligence" to reshape public perception.
A complicated history#
The relationship between Anthropic and Trump's administration has been turbulent. The Pentagon classified the company as a supply-chain risk earlier this year in response to Anthropic's efforts to implement ethical constraints on how its AI systems are deployed. Though Anthropic has challenged the designation through litigation and achieved an initial court victory, the move underscored deeper friction. However, other arms of the administration have struck a notably warmer tone toward the company in recent months.
