AWS CloudWatch Omni Brings AI Agent Monitoring into Observability Platform
Amazon's new AI-first observability service extends CloudWatch to monitor autonomous agents alongside traditional applications, addressing the unique debugging challenges of generative AI workloads.
InfoQ
Amazon has launched CloudWatch Omni, an observability platform designed to monitor both conventional applications and autonomous AI agents in a single environment. The service addresses a gap in existing monitoring tools by capturing and evaluating agent behavior—a task that traditional metrics alone cannot handle.
Why Agent Monitoring Differs from Application Monitoring#
Standard observability metrics like latency, error rates, and CPU usage work well for traditional software, but they fall short for AI agents. An agent execution can appear successful from a technical standpoint while still delivering incorrect results—using the wrong tool, pulling low-quality data, or following an unnecessarily expensive path.
The core problem is non-determinism: a small change to a prompt can degrade an agent's output quality even when standard metrics show no performance degradation. Teams have resorted to manually sifting through logs across multiple systems, unable to efficiently identify what went wrong or why.
How Omni Addresses Agent Observability#
CloudWatch Omni captures end-to-end traces of agent execution and evaluates correctness, coherence, retrieval quality, and tool selection. The platform allows teams to compare different prompts, construct test datasets from real production traffic, run controlled experiments, and catch performance regressions before they reach users.
The service integrates with major agent frameworks—LangChain, LangGraph, CrewAI, OpenAI SDK, Strands, and Vercel AI SDK—and adheres to open standards including OpenInference and AWS Distro for OpenTelemetry (ADOT). It also works with Amazon Bedrock AgentCore and supports evaluators from third parties like Braintrust, DeepEval, and Ragas.
Unified Observability Across Workloads#
Omni consolidates traditional microservices, cloud infrastructure, and AI workloads into a single observability layer. The platform's native OpenTelemetry support allows existing telemetry pipelines to feed directly into Omni without major reconfiguration.
