OpenAI Brings ChatGPT Desktop App to Linux with Codex Integration
The desktop application combining ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex is now available in preview on major Linux distributions, though some advanced features remain unavailable.
The New Stack
OpenAI has expanded its desktop application to Linux, launching a preview version that unifies ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and the company's Codex coding agent in a single interface. The release marks the completion of the company's rollout across all three major desktop operating systems, following launches on Mac and Windows earlier this summer.
Platform Support and Architecture#
The Linux app will run on Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44, with the company providing both .deb and .rpm packages optimized for x64 and ARM64 architectures. According to OpenAI, "Linux has been one of the most-requested platforms for the desktop app, and this launch extends ChatGPT and Codex across every major desktop operating system."
Users will gain access to OpenAI's integrated browser and support for Chrome extensions, bringing feature parity with Mac and Windows versions where possible.
Features Present and Absent#
The Linux version delivers the core ChatGPT and Codex experience, including voice capabilities and support for browser-based workflows. One notable limitation: native Computer Use—the ability for ChatGPT to interact with desktop applications like OpenOffice or GIMP—won't be available at launch. This restriction cascades to related features including Appshots, Record & Replay, and voice commands targeting desktop applications. Browser-centric features like Chrome extensions remain fully supported.
Why a Desktop App Beyond Command Line#
For developers already using Codex through the CLI, the IDE extension, or cloud services, the desktop application serves a different purpose: visual coordination of complex work. Rather than replacing the CLI—which remains superior for repository inspection, command execution, and CI integration—the app functions as a project dashboard. It enables users to maintain multiple long-running tasks, inspect generated code and artifacts, track revisions, and toggle between local and cloud-based development.
The inclusion of ChatGPT Work for knowledge tasks and the standard chat interface adds utility beyond coding scenarios, creating a unified workspace for varied AI-assisted work.
