New Framework Bridges Gap Between AI Lab Performance and Real-World Impact
CIRCLE offers a six-stage evaluation protocol designed to measure how AI systems actually behave and affect organizations once deployed, moving beyond traditional model benchmarks.
Researchers have introduced CIRCLE, a structured evaluation framework aimed at addressing a fundamental challenge in artificial intelligence: the disconnect between how models perform in controlled settings and how they function in actual deployments.
The Reality Gap Problem#
Traditional approaches to assessing AI systems—whether through MLOps frameworks or standard benchmarks—focus heavily on technical metrics: system stability, algorithm accuracy, and model capabilities. Yet these metrics often fail to capture whether deployed systems actually deliver value to organizations or how they behave when users and circumstances deviate from training assumptions. Decision-makers outside technical teams frequently lack systematic evidence about real-world outcomes.
How CIRCLE Works#
CIRCLE operationalizes the Validation phase of TEVV (Test, Evaluation, Verification, and Validation) by converting stakeholder priorities into quantifiable signals. The framework combines multiple research methodologies into a coordinated pipeline:
- Field testing to observe systems in actual use
- Red teaming to stress-test assumptions and surface failure modes
- Longitudinal studies to track behavior over time
This six-stage lifecycle approach produces knowledge that remains comparable across different organizations while staying sensitive to local context and conditions.
Why This Matters#
Unlike participatory design efforts that often remain localized or retrospective algorithmic audits, CIRCLE provides a forward-looking protocol. It connects qualitative, context-dependent insights to scalable quantitative measurements, enabling governance based on demonstrated downstream effects rather than theoretical capabilities. This shift allows organizations to make evidence-based decisions about AI deployment and monitoring that reflect actual operational realities.
