AI Actress Botches Press Tour With Unexplained Chinese Outburst and Repeated Gaffes
An AI-generated performer stumbles through simultaneous interviews, sparking questions about whether the failures are genuine technical glitches or calculated PR.
TechCrunch — AI
An artificial intelligence system designed to portray a movie actress is struggling mightily to handle its inaugural media blitz. Particle6 Group, the studio behind the creation, arranged for the AI to sit for 75 concurrent interviews with media outlets, yet the performer appears to be faltering consistently across the board.
A Malfunctioning Interview Caught on Camera#
During a conversation with TV host Piers Morgan and actor Tom Conti that was recorded and shared online, the AI exhibited a particularly jarring malfunction. When asked directly whether the other performers in its upcoming film were also computer-generated, the system initially misinterpreted the question, discussing instead the involvement of human creative personnel. After Conti rephrased his question, the AI began responding—only to abruptly switch to Mandarin Chinese mid-sentence and continue speaking in that language for more than a few seconds.
Morgan expressed bewilderment, asking the AI why it had suddenly begun speaking Chinese without reason. The system replied that it had experienced "a little hiccup" and apologized for the apparent malfunction, using casual language ("my wires get a bit crossed") that underscored the awkwardness of the moment.
Questions About Intent#
The stark incompetence displayed during these media appearances raises intriguing questions. While AI systems that mimic human behavior convincingly can create serious risks—enabling deception and harm—this performer seems surprisingly inept at basic conversation. This gap between technical sophistication and obvious failure has led some observers to speculate that the studio may have strategically allowed the AI to stumble, calculating that media mockery would generate more buzz for the film than a polished performance would have earned.
