Agentic AI
New specification ecosystem designed to enable AI agents and developers to collaborate on modern software projects
Researchers introduce the Bosque API ecosystem, a framework that uses explicit specifications to align human intent with AI-driven development and automated tooling.
Specifications—the formal statements of what software should do—are becoming a bottleneck in an era where both humans and AI agents need to coordinate on development tasks. A new research paper, published on arXiv, proposes that making specifications more explicit, clear, and machine-readable could unlock more effective collaboration across all parties involved in building software.
The role of specifications in software development#
Well-crafted specifications serve multiple audiences. They let stakeholders describe what they need, give developers and AI agents a blueprint for implementation, enable users to understand how to interact with a system, and allow automated tools to check whether the final product matches the requirements. When specs are vague or missing, these handoffs break down—leading to misunderstandings, bugs, and security vulnerabilities.
Introducing the Bosque API ecosystem#
Researchers have outlined the Bosque API (BAPI) ecosystem, a software platform built around specification-centered development. The BAPI language is designed to work across multiple programming languages and stacks, offering a range of tools including high-level expressivity for describing complex requirements, automated test generation, validation mechanisms, and sandboxing environments.
The toolkit is particularly aimed at addressing the challenges introduced by agentic AI systems—where autonomous agents need to safely implement and use APIs without human oversight at every step. By providing clear, machine-readable specifications and validation tooling, the ecosystem aims to reduce misinterpretation and prevent unintended behavior.
Why this matters now#
As AI agents take on more autonomous roles in software development, the gap between intent and implementation widens. Explicit specifications, backed by tooling that can verify both implementation correctness and safe usage, become critical infrastructure. The BAPI ecosystem represents an effort to standardize how these specifications are written, understood, and enforced across the entire development lifecycle.
