Google Reshuffles AI Leadership as Hassabis Steps Down to Chief Scientist Role

Google has announced sweeping changes to its AI leadership structure, repositioning its most prominent AI executive while creating an opening for new voices at the top of one of its most important units.

Hassabis Moves to Strategic Role#

Demis Hassabis, who has headed Google DeepMind as CEO, is departing the operational leadership role to take on the position of chair at Google DeepMind and chief scientist across Alphabet. This shift frees him to focus on broader strategic initiatives while maintaining his involvement with Isomorphic Labs, Google's drug discovery venture that applies AI to pharmaceutical development.

In a message to staff, Hassabis emphasized his focus on AI's potential to address major health challenges. "It's time for AI to prove its unequivocal value to the world, and what better way to demonstrate that than to help finally cure diseases like cancer," he reportedly stated. He plans to continue advising the company's leadership on artificial general intelligence (AGI) strategy.

Kavukcuoglu Takes Over Day-to-Day Operations#

Koray Kavukcuoglu, who previously served as DeepMind's chief technology officer, is stepping into the senior vice president role to oversee the unit's day-to-day operations. He will report directly to CEO Sundar Pichai and retain his position as Google's chief AI architect, positioning him as the primary technical leader within the AI organization.

Dean and Ghemawat Launch New AI Venture#

In a parallel development, two other prominent figures—Jeff Dean, a three-decade Google veteran and former chief scientist at DeepMind, and Sanjay Ghemawat, a Google Fellow—are exiting the company to launch Discovery Loop, a public benefit corporation focused on AI-driven discovery. Google is serving as an initial investor in the startup.

According to the company's statement, Discovery Loop aims to build AI systems that tackle fundamental problems in machine learning and scientific research. The venture signals Google's willingness to support entrepreneurial efforts by its own executives as the AI field evolves rapidly.
