Nvidia Closes $12.9 Billion Acquisition of AI Model Hub Hugging Face
The chip giant confirms the long-rumored deal, pledging to keep the platform open while gaining a central hub for AI developers and fresh revenue streams.
TechCrunch — AI
Nvidia has officially completed its acquisition of Hugging Face, the sprawling open-source AI model repository, for $12.93 billion. The move consolidates control of a critical infrastructure layer that serves millions of developers and hosts millions of AI models and datasets.
The Scale of the Deal#
Hugging Face operates as a central nexus for the AI development community. The platform houses three million models, one million applications accessed by over 18 million developers, and half a million datasets. The company, founded in 2016, has bootstrapped this ecosystem through six years of fundraising totaling more than $395 million, with its most recent round in 2023 bringing in $235 million from Salesforce Ventures, Google, Amazon, IBM, and notably Nvidia itself.
The deal represents a significant jump from Hugging Face's rejection of a $500 million offer from Nvidia just last year, underscoring the company's surging valuation. Recent reports valued the startup at roughly $150 million in annualized revenue with growth trajectories pointing toward profitability.
Nvidia's Strategic Positioning#
For Nvidia, acquiring Hugging Face serves multiple strategic purposes. As the dominant hardware provider powering AI development and inference, controlling an open-but-aligned ecosystem strengthens the company's position to funnel developers toward its chips. In a blog post, CEO Jensen Huang stressed the company's commitment to preserving openness: "Developers will choose the models they want, the frameworks they want, the clouds and inference service providers they want and the computing platforms they want. Nvidia compute will not be required to build on or deploy through Hugging Face."
The acquisition also unlocks commercial opportunities. Nvidia can now bundle Hugging Face's reach with its underutilized data center capacity, selling packaged offerings to enterprise customers seeking managed AI deployment.
The Open-Model Bet#
Huang has emerged as a vocal champion of open-weight models as strategic assets for American AI leadership. Nvidia has contributed over 500 models and 250 open datasets to Hugging Face itself, and the company recently committed $6 billion to partnership with coding startup Poolside to develop open alternatives to Chinese AI systems. The company also infused over $50 billion into AI frontier laboratories.
In Huang's framing, open models carry national security weight. He emphasized their role in enabling distributed autonomous cybersecurity systems and noted that proprietary alternatives have proven inadequate—Hugging Face itself when proprietary safeguards failed.
