Google launches $899 Googlebook laptop bet on AI-native hardware
Google's new Googlebook—an Android-powered laptop with embedded Gemini AI—is now available for pre-order, representing the company's push to make AI a core part of personal computing devices.

Google has opened pre-orders for its Googlebook, an AI-native laptop priced at $899 that positions artificial intelligence not as an optional add-on but as a foundational element of the machine itself. The device marks an ambitious gambit: that customers will upgrade their hardware specifically to access Gemini capabilities built into the operating system rather than accessed through apps or browsers.
A new kind of laptop#
Unlike traditional Chromebooks, Googlebooks run Android OS paired with a desktop version of Chrome and ChromeOS components, but their distinguishing feature is the deep integration of Google's Gemini AI. The machines showcase three primary AI-focused capabilities: an intelligent cursor that acts as a gateway to Gemini for selecting and analyzing on-screen content; Rambler, a voice-to-text tool that transforms rambling speech into polished written text; and vibe-coded widgets that adapt to user preferences through AI.
How the AI cursor works#
Google's Magic Cursor attempts to reinvent the pointer as an AI intermediary. Users can highlight webpage content for Gemini to process, ask the AI to assess whether an email is potentially fraudulent, or select images for Gemini to synthesize visually. The concept mirrors Android's "Circle to Search" feature on phones, though that gesture-based search tool alone has not driven significant market shifts.
The broader education strategy#
More strategically significant than individual features is Googlebook's role in Google's longer-term vision. The company operates roughly 50 million Chromebooks in schools globally. By transitioning this education market toward Gemini-powered devices, Google could establish AI as a standard component of institutional computing—potentially shaping an entire generation's relationship with AI tools. Existing Chromebooks will continue receiving support, though Google signals many could eventually migrate to the Googlebook experience.
What's included and availability#
The $899 price includes a year of Google AI Pro, which provides 5TB of cloud storage, Gemini Advanced features, plus three months each of YouTube Premium and Adobe Photoshop. Devices receive updates for up to ten years. Manufacturers including Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo have built flagship models using aluminum, magnesium alloy, and carbon fiber, with up to 2.8K OLED screens, haptic glass trackpads, and processors from Intel and Qualcomm paired with dedicated AI accelerators. Battery life reaches approximately 14 hours.
