Spotify will label AI-generated artists and exclude them from recommendations
The streaming platform is rolling out badges for synthetic personas and will stop surfacing their music in editorial and algorithmic feeds by default.

Spotify is introducing a system to identify and deprioritize music from AI-generated artists in its recommendation engine. Beginning in mid-September, profiles that represent artificial personas rather than real people will display an "AI Persona" badge throughout the app.
How the labeling will work#
Starting immediately, artists can voluntarily declare their AI persona status. However, Spotify won't rely solely on self-reporting. The platform plans to combine human review and machine learning to flag profiles where the artist name, image, or other identity markers "appear to represent photorealistic AI-generated identities." Profiles flagged through this detection process will receive a "Likely AI Persona" badge. Spotify intends to prioritize reviewing high-traffic artist profiles first, focusing on accounts that surpass certain audience thresholds.
Artists receiving a "Likely AI Persona" designation will be notified and granted the ability to challenge the label. Listeners will also eventually gain the ability to report suspicious AI-generated identities directly.
Removing synthetic music from recommendations#
Music attributed to AI personas will no longer appear as defaults in Spotify's editorial selections or personalized recommendation algorithms. According to Spotify, "listeners have been clear in telling us that they don't like seeing an artist profile that seems human, only to find out that the persona is AI-generated." The company emphasized that it designs its algorithms to surface work from authentic human artists while filtering out "spam, slop, or low-effort content."
Distinguishing persona from creation method#
The labeling system focuses specifically on artist identity rather than production methods. Unlike competitor Deezer, Spotify currently lacks technology to automatically detect whether the actual music was created with AI tools. The platform does permit musicians to voluntarily disclose AI use in their creative process and offers a "Verified by Spotify" badge to authenticate human creators.
