Ex-Spotify Engineers Launch Commerce AI Startup With $10M Seed Round
Three former Spotify architects behind its recommendation engine are applying intent-prediction AI to e-commerce with their new startup, Malachyte.

Three alumni from Spotify's recommendation team—Sidd Motwani, Ian Anderson, and Shivaditya Sinha—have launched an e-commerce startup called Malachyte to bring behavioral AI into online shopping. The company announced it had closed a $10 million seed round co-led by Bessemer Venture Partners and Gradient to expand sales and engineering efforts.
From Music to Shopping#
At Spotify, the three engineers developed Vector AI, the system responsible for powering roughly 90% of recommendations to the platform's 800 million users. Rather than simply replaying what users heard before, the system learns to forecast their immediate intent—what they're likely to want next. They're now applying that same predictive capability to retail.
The Commerce Problem Malachyte Solves#
Most e-commerce sites today rely on a narrow set of signals: purchase history, demographic tags, and logged-in profiles. First-time visitors typically encounter a generic site layout identical to everyone else's. Returning customers see suggestions based on past purchases rather than present needs.
Malachyte's platform uses what the company terms "two-headed Vector AI" to reshape that approach. The system builds a real-time profile of both what a shopper prefers and what they're trying to accomplish in the moment, with no login required.
How It Works in Practice#
The system starts profiling behavior the instant a page loads, then refines its understanding continuously. Motwani, the CEO, offered this example: if a visitor searches for "heavy-duty boot" and clicks twice on steel-toed options, the platform immediately surfaces work pants and gloves higher on the page while demoting dress shoes—all within a single session, without stored history.
The platform also weighs contextual clues that conventional systems ignore. A mobile visitor clicking through an email link at 11 p.m. has different intentions than the same person browsing on desktop at midday. Malachyte accounts for those distinctions in real time.
Market Traction#
Malachyte began development in 2024 and spent the following years testing with over 20 enterprise customers across travel, grocery, and retail sectors before zeroing in on e-commerce. The platform went live with Fun.com in fall 2025. As of June 2026, it became available to Shopify merchants via native integration, and larger retailers can plug it in through API connections.
