Anthropic inks $10 billion computing deal with Volta, a startup backed by crypto firm Bitdeer
The Claude maker is expanding its cloud infrastructure through a six-year partnership that will establish a data center in Norway powered by Nvidia's latest AI chips.
TechCrunch — AI
Anthropic is accelerating its infrastructure buildout with a reported $10 billion computing agreement with Volta, an emerging AI cloud provider. The deal signals the company's determination to secure sufficient compute resources as it competes with rivals in the rapidly scaling artificial intelligence market.
Deal Structure and Partners#
Under the six-year arrangement, Volta will deliver cloud computing capacity to Anthropic through a new data center facility in Norway. The startup has partnered with Bitdeer, a cryptocurrency mining company, to construct and operate the facility. The installation is designed to handle 133 megawatts of capacity and will run on Nvidia's Vera Rubin systems—the chipmaker's latest high-performance AI processor architecture.
Volta itself participates in Nvidia's Cloud Partner program, a network of cloud providers leveraging Nvidia GPUs across their infrastructure.
Strategic Context#
Anthropic's push to lock in computing resources reflects mounting competition in the generative AI landscape. The company has moved quickly to establish infrastructure partnerships, with recent agreements involving both SpaceX and Amazon. These deals underscore how large language model developers now treat compute access as a competitive advantage, essential to training and deploying increasingly capable AI systems.
