Nvidia acquires Hugging Face for $13 billion in major AI consolidation play
The chip maker is making its largest acquisition ever to gain control over a central hub for open-source AI models.
Ars Technica
Nvidia has announced plans to acquire Hugging Face, a major platform hosting millions of AI models and datasets, for $13 billion. The deal represents the largest outright purchase in the chip giant's history and signals an aggressive push to shape the AI ecosystem while expanding beyond its core hardware business.
The acquisition and its stakes#
Hugging Face, valued at $7 billion just a year ago when it declined Nvidia's earlier investment to preserve its independence, functions as a central repository for the AI community. The platform has become synonymous with democratizing AI development by hosting open-weight models—systems where the underlying architecture is transparent and users can download, modify, and deploy them without reliance on proprietary providers.
For Nvidia, now the world's most valuable company, the purchase represents a strategic move beyond semiconductors. The company controls the chips that power most large-scale AI training and deployment; acquiring a gateway through which developers access models amplifies its influence over which AI systems gain traction globally.
The open-source rationale#
Nvidia frames the acquisition as an investment in accelerating open-source AI adoption. The company argues that open-weight models allow startups, institutions, and smaller enterprises to build advanced applications without either reconstructing systems from scratch or purchasing expensive access to closed commercial models from rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic.
CEO Jensen Huang stated that this approach enables AI capabilities to "scale sustainably into billions of everyday tasks across factories, hospitals, farms, classrooms, and Main Street businesses."
Scale of the bet#
The deal dwarfs Nvidia's previous major acquisition: Mellanox, a networking company it bought for $6.9 billion in 2020. That transaction positioned Nvidia to sell complete data center infrastructure rather than chips alone.
Nvidia has committed hundreds of billions in funding, loan guarantees, and other financial commitments to nurture a broader ecosystem of AI companies, a strategy that generates demand for its hardware while cementing its centrality to the sector.
Path forward and regulatory questions#
Nvidia expects to complete the acquisition by 2027, though the transaction will likely draw scrutiny from competition regulators worldwide. By gaining control of Hugging Face, Nvidia would command one of the most influential channels through which AI models are distributed and adopted across industries.
