Energy Sector Workers Spot High-Value Generative AI Opportunities in Operations and Analysis
A new industrial study reveals how employees across an energy company see AI adoption fitting into their work—from reporting and forecasting to maintenance and anomaly detection.
Researchers set out to understand how generative AI and language model-based workflows could reshape daily operations at a major energy company. Rather than imposing top-down AI implementation roadmaps, the study asked frontline workers themselves: where would AI actually help?
The Research Approach#
Over four weeks, the team conducted sixteen in-depth interviews spanning nine different departments. This was paired with internal company documents and direct observation of workflows. The data collection focused on capturing authentic perspectives from the people who do the work—those best positioned to identify genuine pain points and opportunities.
Where Employees See AI Fitting In#
Workers identified several operational areas where generative AI and LLM-based tools could deliver measurable value:
- Reporting and documentation – reducing the time spent preparing formal reports and summaries
- Forecasting and predictive analysis – leveraging AI to improve demand and trend predictions
- Data handling and processing – automating routine data preparation and transformation
- Maintenance-related activities – AI assistance for scheduling, diagnostics, and work planning
- Anomaly detection – identifying unusual patterns in systems and equipment performance that warrant investigation
Incremental Implementation as the Path Forward#
A key finding was that participants saw AI adoption not as a sudden transformation, but as a series of smaller steps. They emphasized that new tools would be most effective if they could be layered into existing workflows rather than replacing established processes wholesale. This incremental approach suggests that successful AI deployment in the energy sector may depend on change management as much as technical capability.
Broader Implications#
This work offers both a sector-specific snapshot and a framework that could inform AI adoption research across different industries. By documenting how workers themselves understand and prioritize AI use cases, the study provides a foundation for practical implementation strategies and cross-industry comparison of AI adoption patterns.
