Microsoft Bumps Surface Pro 12 and Laptop 13 with Snapdragon X2 Plus, Pricing Jumps Significantly
The refreshed compact Surface models deliver better battery life and performance but come with substantially higher starting prices.
The Verge
Microsoft has announced updated versions of its 12-inch Surface Pro and 13-inch Surface Laptop, both now equipped with Qualcomm's Snapdragon X2 Plus processor. The redesigns maintain the familiar form factors and features from their predecessors while introducing meaningful performance gains—but at a cost.
Price Increases Reflect Memory Minimums#
The most notable change is the jump in starting price. The Surface Pro 12-inch Second Edition now begins at $1,149.99, up from last year's $799.99 opening point. Similarly, the 13-inch Surface Laptop has climbed from $899.99 to $1,199.99. A major driver of this increase is Microsoft's decision to eliminate the base 8GB RAM tier; both devices now start at 16GB, with options to max out at 24GB.
Performance and Battery Gains#
The six-core Snapdragon X2 Plus brings tangible improvements. Microsoft cites up to 18 percent more efficient battery performance, over 60 percent faster graphics, and up to 95 percent speedier local AI inferencing via the built-in neural processing unit.
These efficiency gains translate into extended usage windows:
- Surface Pro 12-inch: One additional hour of web browsing, reaching up to 13 hours total
- Surface Laptop 13-inch: Two additional hours, totaling up to 18 hours of web browsing
Display Refinement with Unchanged Specs#
Both models retain their existing panel technologies but receive a brightness bump. The Surface Pro 12-inch keeps its 2196 × 1464 LCD running at up to 90Hz, while the Laptop maintains a 1920 × 1280 display capped at 60Hz. However, each has been upgraded from 400 to 500 nits of brightness.
Port layouts and wireless standards remain consistent with prior generations: two USB-C 3.2 ports on both, plus USB-A 3.2 and a 3.5mm jack on the Laptop. Both support Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4.
Design and Availability#
Microsoft has reintroduced black as a color choice alongside platinum silver and violet options. The Surface Pro 12-inch will also ship in an optional 5G variant for enterprise customers. Notably, neither device receives a haptic trackpad upgrade, despite Windows 11's new subtle haptic nudges and the already featuring haptic feedback. Both devices launch on October 13th and will be available to both consumer and commercial buyers.
