AI coaching helps people express empathy more effectively, study finds
Researchers discovered that while people feel empathy, they often fail to communicate it—but personalized feedback from language models can significantly improve empathic expression.
Despite feeling genuine empathy, humans frequently struggle to express it in ways others find meaningful. A new study from researchers working with large language models reveals that targeted feedback can substantially strengthen how people communicate compassion, offering a scalable intervention for cultivating this essential skill.
The Empathy Gap#
The research exposed a striking contradiction: in blind evaluations, responses generated by AI systems are often rated as more empathic than those written by humans. Yet when people learn the same response came from a machine rather than a person, they report feeling significantly less understood. This points to a deeper issue—not a lack of human empathy, but a gap between what people feel internally and what they actually convey to others.
How the Study Worked#
Researchers built a conversation platform where participants had text-based exchanges with an AI expressing realistic personal difficulties. The experiment involved nearly 1,000 participants engaging in roughly 2,900 conversations that generated nearly 34,000 messages. A randomly selected group received personalized coaching from language models offering specific, data-driven feedback on how to express empathy more effectively.
Results and Key Findings#
The coaching intervention produced significant improvements in empathic communication without making responses feel artificially similar or robotic. Researchers also cataloged the specific language patterns people naturally use to express empathy across different scenarios—both personal struggles and work-related challenges—creating a taxonomy of idiomatic empathic expressions found in authentic dialogue.
Implications#
The work suggests that empathy cultivation is learnable and that AI-powered feedback can help people recognize and strengthen their own capacity to communicate care effectively at scale. This opens pathways for broader applications in education, training, and interpersonal communication.
