Google's Gemini Gets Power to Make Business Calls on Your Behalf
A new AI-powered calling feature lets Pixel owners have Gemini handle restaurant reservations, inventory checks, and appointment changes automatically.
TechCrunch — AI
Google is expanding Gemini's capabilities with a fresh calling feature that transforms the AI assistant into a proxy for handling routine business interactions. Known as "Call for Me," the tool lets Gemini dial businesses directly and manage conversations—from navigating phone menus to scheduling changes—all while you watch and retain the ability to jump in at any moment.
How It Works#
The AI can manage a range of practical tasks: confirming whether a store has an item in stock, securing a restaurant table, rescheduling an existing appointment, or placing an order on hold. When making calls, Gemini introduces itself, handles automated systems, stays through hold times if needed, and then engages with whoever picks up. You monitor everything through a live transcript displayed on your phone, and your own phone number appears on the recipient's end.
Critically, the feature only operates with information you explicitly approve—a safeguard that expands what the AI can accomplish compared to earlier versions of Google's calling tools.
Phased Rollout and Testing#
The company is rolling out "Call for Me" initially to Pixel 11 subscribers who maintain an active Gemini subscription in the United States. The feature also requires the beta version of Google's Android Phone app, underscoring that this remains an experimental stage.
Google is proceeding carefully with a limited release, noting that "real-world conversations are nuanced" and the company needs runway to refine the system before broader availability. This cautious approach reflects the technical complexity of handling unpredictable human interactions at scale.
Building on Years of Calling Innovation#
This launch represents the culmination of Google's long-running exploration into AI-mediated calling. The company first demonstrated the concept at its I/O developer conference years ago, showcasing an Assistant that could call salons and book appointments while adding natural vocal flourishes like "umm" and "ahh."
More recently, Google introduced related features: "Ask for Me" let Gemini call to gather pricing and service details, while Pixel owners gained access to helpers like "Hold for Me" (which waits through hold queues) and "" (which guides navigation of voice-based menus). "Call for Me" bundles these capabilities into a more autonomous, conversational experience.
