2028 Volvo XC40 Gets Sleeker Design and AI Smarts in Latest Update
Volvo refreshes its compact SUV with streamlined styling, new lighting, and Google's Gemini assistant integration.
Ars Technica
Volvo is preparing another refresh of its XC40 compact crossover, its second major midcycle update since the model debuted in 2017. Rather than an all-new generation, the 2028 model year brings refined design, upgraded technology, and enhanced safety features aimed at keeping the popular compact SUV competitive.
Streamlined Styling and New Lighting#
The visual overhaul focuses on a more minimalist aesthetic. Volvo's designers have subtly reduced the car's dimensions by rounding away unnecessary corners and volume, making the XC40 appear more refined and less aggressive. From a pedestrian's perspective, these refinements create the impression of a smaller vehicle with a softer footprint—a marked departure from the industry trend of ever-expanding SUVs.
The lighting signature gets a notable refresh while retaining Volvo's recognizable design language. The front-end "Thor's Hammer" daylight running lights remain a defining feature but now integrate matrix LED technology in a more restrained, less visibly complex form. The rear light clusters also receive fresh LED clusters to match the forward-looking approach.
Interior Upgrades and AI Integration#
Inside, the standout addition is an 11.2-inch touchscreen powering an enhanced infotainment system. Building on Volvo's existing partnership with Google, the latest software layer now includes Gemini, Google's AI assistant. The voice control functionality shows measurable improvement over its predecessor, delivering more intuitive responses and broader capability. Material updates include a new cardamom leather interior option paired with open-grain wood trim.
Practical cabin improvements include improved storage organization in the cargo area.
Expanded Safety Systems#
True to Volvo's safety-first philosophy, the 2028 XC40 receives a comprehensive sensor upgrade. New front, rear, and corner radars join an updated forward-facing camera and additional ultrasonic sensors. Revised software algorithms enhance the 360-degree parking camera system with improved 3D visualization to help drivers navigate tight spaces.
Availability and Timeline#
Production begins later in 2025, with customer deliveries expected to commence in 2026. A corresponding update to the all-electric variant will incorporate the same styling improvements, though the U.S. market will not receive that electric variant.
