The science educator acknowledged he's become too dependent on chatbots for video production and plans to scale back output to restore authenticity.

Hank Green, the novelist and science communicator with over 3 million YouTube subscribers, has publicly acknowledged an unhealthy dependence on AI tools after viewers caught what appeared to be unedited chatbot language in one of his recent videos.
What sparked the controversy#
A suspicious phrase in a Complexly educational channel video—"I appreciate the pushback"—stood out awkwardly amid Green's usual tone and raised suspicions among fans that he'd relied too heavily on ChatGPT for scripting. The discovery prompted a broader conversation about the authenticity and care going into his content.
Green's response#
The creator initially offered a brief explanation on X (formerly Twitter), stating he'd used ChatGPT for research support while writing the script and that the questionable line was actually a response from the episode's guest. He later posted a more detailed apology on Reddit, where he described himself as "mortified" at having disappointed his audience and announced he would reduce his video output going forward.
Green maintained that his use of AI had been limited to "locating papers and other resources" and that his core ideas and voice remained genuinely his own. However, he conceded that it was fair to criticize him for allowing the technology to dilute his work and disconnect him from his viewers' perspectives.
A broader reckoning with AI#
While stopping short of being an "AI-hater," Green outlined specific concerns about the technology, including its environmental footprint and the speed at which corporations are consolidating economic leverage around these systems. More personally, he recognized that the dopamine hit from constantly interacting with language models had become compulsive—creating a cycle where "doing more and more and more" felt rewarding but wasn't serving him or his audience.
What comes next#
Green plans to post less frequently across his channels and refocus on content that prioritizes authentic writing and unscripted, direct-to-camera thought. He cited a recent meditative video as an example of the kind of work that felt whole and genuine to him. The underlying goal is to restore confidence among his audience that his words and ideas are genuinely his own, delivered with the care and intentionality his audience has come to expect.
