Vercel Launches Eve, an Open-Source Framework for Production AI Agents
Eve provides a filesystem-first architecture for building, deploying, and operating AI agents with built-in features for durable execution, sandboxing, and multi-channel integration.
InfoQ
Vercel has released Eve, an open-source framework designed to simplify AI agent development and deployment at scale. The platform organizes agents through a filesystem-based architecture where each capability—instructions, tools, skills, and communication channels—is represented as a file, eliminating much of the manual infrastructure work developers typically face.
Key Architecture & Features#
Eve's strength lies in its simplicity: developers configure agents through a single config file, define behavior in Markdown, write tools as TypeScript, and let the framework auto-discover components at build time. It includes several production-focused capabilities:
- Durable execution: Conversations persist as workflows that can pause and resume across failures or deployments
- Sandboxed code execution: Agent-generated code runs in isolated environments, either locally via Docker or in production via Vercel Sandbox
- Human approval workflows: Built-in gates for sensitive operations
- Multi-channel deployment: The same agent can be deployed across Slack, Discord, Teams, Telegram, GitHub, and HTTP APIs without core changes
- Observability: OpenTelemetry-based tracing for all model calls, tool invocations, and sandbox commands
- Subagent support: Agents can delegate to specialized subagents with independent execution environments
- Scheduled tasks: Cron-based job support for recurring automation
The framework connects to external services via Model Context Protocol servers or OpenAPI specs, with built-in integrations for Slack, GitHub, Snowflake, Salesforce, Notion, and Linear.
Production Maturity & Ecosystem Context#
Vercel reports operating over 100 internal production agents using Eve for analytics, customer support, sales operations, and content review. The public preview launch includes a CLI tool and integration with standard Vercel workflows.
Eve enters a competitive landscape alongside LangGraph, CrewAI, AutoGen, and Strands Agents SDK. While comparisons have been mixed—some developers question what differentiates Eve beyond consolidating existing capabilities into a single framework—the emphasis on durable execution, sandboxing, evaluations, and integrated deployment appears to address gaps in current alternatives.
