Patreon cuts 20% of workforce, citing AI-driven industry shift
The creator-funding platform is eliminating roughly 93 positions as leadership frames AI adoption as essential to the company's survival.

Patreon is cutting its headcount by approximately one-fifth, removing around 93 staff members from the payroll. CEO Jack Conte announced the move in an internal memo, framing it within the broader reshaping of technology companies by artificial intelligence tools.
Why the layoffs?#
Conte stated that while the decision doesn't reflect a belief that AI will eliminate human workers, the technology has "fundamentally transformed the tech industry" across product development, operations, and communication practices. He emphasized that this shift has reshaped how Patreon itself works and structures its teams.
Conte's AI stance#
In a recent Decoder interview, Conte laid out an unequivocal position on the technology. He argued that as a product and engineering firm, Patreon must "fully embrace" AI tools to return capabilities to creators. Without doing so, he suggested, "we, as a company, will be dead in three years."
History of workforce reductions#
This latest reduction continues a pattern: Patreon previously laid off 17% of its workforce in 2022, when it also shuttered offices in Dublin and Berlin.
