AI Classifiers Automate Assessment of Software Engineering Student Reflections
Researchers have developed an eight-indicator framework and machine learning models that enable rapid, scalable feedback on reflective writing in project-based engineering courses.
Reflective practice is essential in software engineering education, yet manually grading student reflections consumes significant instructor time and often yields vague feedback. A team of researchers has now created an automated solution: a standardized assessment framework paired with AI classifiers that evaluate reflection quality at scale.
The Framework and Study Design#
The researchers adapted existing reflection frameworks through careful refinement to establish an eight-indicator scheme for assessing student reflections in software engineering contexts. To validate their approach, three independent annotators labeled student reflection texts and achieved moderate to reliable agreement levels. The team then trained multiple machine learning models—both fine-tuned transformer encoders and zero-shot large language models—and compared their performance.
Key Results#
Fine-tuned RoBERTa models emerged as the strongest performers, substantially outpacing decoder-only language models in both accuracy and processing speed. Notably, the classifier achieved agreement levels comparable to human evaluators on most indicators while delivering near-instantaneous classifications. The researchers developed two model variants to accommodate different assessment priorities.
Impact and Implications#
By automating reflection assessment, instructors can now provide timely, structured feedback without the burden of manual review. The framework-based approach ensures consistency in what gets evaluated, addressing a common challenge in reflective writing assessment. For students, faster feedback cycles support more iterative improvement of their reflective practice—a key skill in collaborative software engineering work.
