Google tightens Gemini access: Free users limited to Flash Lite starting October 9
A major reshuffling of Google's AI subscription tiers will push premium features behind paywalls while downgrading the mid-tier AI Plus plan.
The Verge
Google is rolling back free access to its more capable Gemini models. Starting October 9th, users on the free tier will be confined to Flash Lite—the least powerful option—while Flash and Pro disappear from the no-cost offering.
What's changing#
The shift affects all three subscription tiers:
- Free tier: Restricted to Flash Lite only (previously had Flash and Pro as options)
- AI Plus ($4.99/month): Will lose access to Gemini Pro entirely
- Premium tiers: AI Pro ($19.99/month) and AI Ultra ($99.99/month) remain the only way to access Gemini Pro and the new "Deep Think" advanced reasoning feature
Google says it will notify AI Plus subscribers by email before they lose Gemini Pro access.
How effort levels work#
Users will retain the ability to select low, medium, or high effort settings for whichever model they can access. However, higher effort levels consume your monthly usage quota more quickly, creating another practical limit on heavier use.
Why it matters#
The restructuring represents a significant tightening of what Google offers at no cost, making it harder for casual users to try the company's strongest models. For the $4.99 AI Plus tier, dropping Gemini Pro is a meaningful downgrade that effectively pushes serious users toward the much pricier $19.99 and $99.99 options. This follows Google's move to introduce usage limits on Gemini earlier this year, which already constrained free-tier consumption.
