Vantora raises $100M to build startups exclusively for Fortune 500 partners
The startup-builder firm pivots toward proprietary AI ventures designed for corporate customers who want to own the technology outright.

Vantora, a firm that launches startups tailor-made for large enterprises, has secured $100 million in funding from Silversmith Capital Partners—its first outside investment. The move marks a strategic shift away from building ventures for the open market, focusing instead on creating proprietary solutions that corporate partners can eventually absorb into their own operations.
A New Model for Corporate Innovation#
The company, which began operations under the name UP.Labs in 2022, originally positioned itself as a hybrid between an incubator and a venture arm. It worked with major corporate customers such as Porsche, Alaska Airlines, and J.B. Hunt to develop new business ventures. However, CEO John Kuolt says the firm is now narrowing its focus—building startups exclusively for corporate partners who invest in them and become their anchor customers.
The key innovation: these corporate backers can now fold the ventures into their own business operations rather than seeing them spun off as independent companies. Kuolt described this approach as creating a "proprietary M&A pipeline," allowing Vantora to pursue opportunities that companies consider too strategically sensitive or competitive to release to the market.
Why Physical AI Became the Focus#
This structural change has naturally pushed Vantora toward physical AI—autonomous systems and intelligent machinery that requires proprietary ownership. Large industrial firms, Kuolt explained, cannot outsource critical automation to third parties without surrendering competitive advantage.
"Imagine you're a Fortune 100 industrial company and you need to retrofit all of your hardware and machines for autonomy," Kuolt said. "You need to own that, it needs to be sovereign, and you can't rely on a third party." Previously, Vantora would pass on ideas that fit this bill because they were too sensitive for open-market ventures. The new model unlocks those opportunities.
Current Corporate Partnerships#
Vantora's existing customer base spans multiple sectors: automotive (Porsche), aviation (Alaska Airlines), logistics and freight (J.B. Hunt and Wabash), and furniture retail (TDG, parent company of Ashley Furniture). The firm has also expanded into industrial manufacturing and oil and gas, though specific corporate partners in those sectors remain undisclosed.
The company remains headquartered in California and still shares office space with the venture firm Up.Partners, though it operates as a completely independent entity.
