Shopify welcomes AI agents to complete purchases, breaking ranks with Amazon and Adidas
The e-commerce platform is extending browser-based AI agents' capabilities to handle full checkout transactions, the opposite direction from rivals blocking autonomous shopping.

Shopify has chosen to embrace AI agents in the checkout process, moving against the tide of retailers like Amazon and Adidas who are restricting autonomous shopping on their platforms.
The company announced Monday that browser-based AI agents can now finalize purchases across Shopify merchant sites — a significant expansion from their previous ability to search inventory and add items to shopping carts.
How the new capability works#
Shopify previously enabled WebMCP support that let AI agents browse through retailer catalogs and manage carts. The latest upgrade adds WebMCP to the checkout stage, including integration with Shop Pay, allowing agents to read checkout screens, modify order details, and submit transactions when authorized by the buyer — all without relying on screenshots or web scraping.
The rollout introduces three new tools: get_checkout, update_checkout, and complete_checkout. These allow agents to review purchase details, adjust elements like shipping addresses or delivery methods, and finalize orders with customer approval.
Why Shopify is different#
Whereas Amazon and Adidas have moved to block autonomous agents from making transactions on their behalf, Shopify is moving in the opposite direction. The platform's strategy centers on Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), a standardized framework for discovering products, managing carts, and completing purchases. This approach ensures agents access structured data rather than parsing HTML designed for human users.
"These WebMCP tools provide structured and efficient APIs, purposely designed — via UCP — to ensure accurate commerce facts, required disclosures, and handoff requirements," said Gil Greenberg, a staff product manager on agentic commerce at Shopify.
Partnerships taking shape#
Major AI agents including Muse and Instinct already have direct partnerships with Shopify for autonomous commerce. The Instinct partnership was unveiled the same day as this announcement.
The feature rolls out to all qualifying Shopify merchants immediately. Shopify also maintains a hosted Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for agents operating server-to-server, offering merchants flexibility in how they enable AI purchasing on their storefronts.
