WebChoreArena Pushes Web Agent Benchmarking Beyond Simple Tasks
Researchers extend WebArena with 532 complex tasks targeting memory, calculation, and long-term tracking to better stress-test AI web browsing agents.
Existing benchmarks for AI web browsing agents may no longer adequately measure what these systems can actually do. A new benchmark called WebChoreArena aims to fill that gap by introducing significantly harder tasks that require agents to handle messy, real-world web chores rather than simple navigation scenarios.
The Challenge with Current Benchmarks#
Web browsing agents powered by large language models (LLMs) have grown remarkably capable at automating web-based work. However, existing evaluation frameworks like WebArena may not push these systems hard enough. As agents improve, researchers need benchmarks that scale in difficulty to remain meaningful. WebChoreArena addresses this by adding 532 meticulously designed tasks built over more than 300 hours of development work.
Three Dimensions of Complexity#
The new benchmark systematically increases difficulty along three fronts:
- Massive Memory: Tasks require agents to accurately store and recall large volumes of data gathered from browsing observations
- Calculation: Agents must perform precise mathematical operations on collected information to reach correct conclusions
- Long-Term Memory: Challenges demand that agents track and maintain information consistently as they move between different webpages
Built on Solid Foundations#
WebChoreArena sits directly atop the four existing WebArena environments, preserving strict compatibility. This design ensures researchers can make direct, controlled comparisons with prior results while exploring the new frontier of harder tasks.
Early Results#
Initial testing shows that newer LLMs do improve significantly on WebChoreArena compared to earlier versions, suggesting the benchmark effectively measures progress. Yet even with GPT-5-level performance, substantial gaps remain compared to WebArena baselines—confirming that WebChoreArena genuinely raises the bar for what agents need to accomplish.
