AI Hedge Fund Situational Awareness Doubles Down on Chip Startup With $400M Investment
Despite recent portfolio liquidation and losses, the fund commits fresh capital to Source Foundry's semiconductor manufacturing ambitions.
TechCrunch — AI
Situational Awareness, an artificial intelligence-focused hedge fund that recently faced significant setbacks, is making a major capital move by injecting $400 million into Source Foundry, a Silicon Valley chip startup. The fresh infusion, reported by The Wall Street Journal, brings the fund's cumulative commitment to the company to $500 million.
Difficult summer forces portfolio reshuffling#
The investment comes at a turbulent moment for Situational Awareness. Just last month, the fund liquidated most of its publicly traded holdings, offloading them to billionaire Ken Griffin's Citadel as AI infrastructure stocks tumbled. The downsizing proved costly: assets under management shrunk by half, from $20 billion to $10 billion. However, the fund retained its stakes in Anthropic, suggesting a selective confidence in certain private bets.
Who's behind the hedge fund#
Situational Awareness was established in 2024 by Leopold Aschenbrenner, a former researcher at OpenAI who was in his mid-twenties with no prior trading background when he founded the operation. Despite his inexperience, the fund initially posted strong results before facing headwinds from the recent downturn in AI-related equities.
The Source Foundry bet#
Source Foundry, founded by Stanford-trained researchers, aims to revolutionize semiconductor manufacturing by reducing both production timelines and costs. The company operates in stealth mode, keeping its technical roadmap largely under wraps—yet it has attracted sufficient confidence to command this substantial commitment from a major investor.
