Analysis of 47,000 job postings shows AI reshaping engineering roles into new hybrids
Research uncovers 23 emerging engineering titles that blend skills from multiple disciplines rather than replacing workers with AI.
The New Stack
A study of nearly 47,000 recent engineering job postings from Fortune 500 companies has identified 23 emerging job titles shaped by the rise of AI—most of which deliberately combine skill sets from multiple established roles rather than creating entirely new positions. The research, conducted by the AI-native talent platform Andela, reveals how tech's traditional pattern of role evolution is playing out in the AI era.
Among listings explicitly seeking AI or machine learning engineers, more than half incorporated capabilities drawn from two or more distinct engineering disciplines. This pattern reflects how forward-thinking organizations are restructuring positions to reflect real operational needs in deploying AI safely and efficiently across their development pipelines.
The Five Emerging Roles Leading the Shift#
MLOps pipeline engineer dominates the new roles, combining 46% machine learning engineer expertise with 23% DevOps engineer skills, plus contributions from data engineers, AI specialists, and data scientists. These professionals build and operate the automated systems that deploy, version, and monitor machine learning models in production.
LLM application engineer roles draw primarily from AI and ML backgrounds (48% and 34% respectively) but also incorporate elements of product design, software architecture, and embedded systems work. They focus on building applications that leverage large language models and conversational systems.
FinOps reliability engineer positions bridge cloud infrastructure concerns, pulling 36% from DevOps backgrounds, 27% from site reliability engineering, 18% from cloud engineering, and smaller portions from DevSecOps and cloud architecture roles. They optimize both reliability and costs.
Docs-as-Code engineer roles reshape the traditional technical writer function by adding program management and DevOps capabilities, transforming documentation from static assets into specification-driven code.
Product frontend engineer positions blend traditional frontend development (roughly one-third) with product management skills (another third), rounded out by full-stack, UX research, and design expertise. These roles own the complete user-facing feature lifecycle from conception through launch.
Why Specialization Remains Essential#
Despite claims that AI will push workers toward generalism, the data suggests the opposite. "These emerging roles aren't generalist at all," notes Cory Hymel, head of research at Andela. "They bridge skill sets from several existing roles, but each addresses a specific operational or product need."
