Google explores AI-powered personal calls for casual messages to friends and family
Code in an Android update hints that Gemini's automated calling feature could soon extend beyond business contexts to help users send quick messages via phone.

Google may soon let you use its Gemini AI to place casual phone calls to personal contacts—a broader application of technology the company has already deployed for business-related calls. According to Android Authority, evidence of the expansion emerged in an APK analysis, which revealed sample commands like "Call Mom and tell her I will be 15 minutes late" and "Call John and ask if he is coming for dinner."
What this means in practice#
Under this expanded system, Gemini would likely handle short, transactional interactions rather than full conversations. The AI could deliver brief messages to people who prefer phone calls to texts, frequently miss messages, or still rely on landlines—essentially automating quick notifications through the medium of a phone call.
Privacy controls on the horizon#
The same code analysis uncovered references to granular permission settings within individual applications. These would enable users to selectively grant or deny Gemini access to specific capabilities, including the ability to make outgoing calls. Critically, this architecture might also let people block incoming automated calls from Gemini entirely. That said, Android Authority notes that Google could choose not to publicly launch either the expanded feature or these granular controls.
Why it matters#
The feature addresses a real gap: some contacts remain unreachable by text and genuinely prefer voice communication. Automating these routine messages would save time for quick household coordination or status updates without requiring a typed conversation.
