Apple tightens Mac disk access rules amid AI agent security concerns
Apple is introducing stricter controls over full disk access permissions on macOS to counter emerging threats posed by autonomous AI agents.
The Verge
Apple is implementing new safeguards designed to prevent AI agents from gaining unrestricted access to user files across macOS devices. The company says the shift is a direct response to security risks that have grown more severe as autonomous AI tools become increasingly capable and prevalent.
New Controls on the Way#
The company plans to introduce enhanced permission controls that will require users to take deliberate, visible steps before granting any application the ability to access their entire hard drive. According to Apple's Friday announcement, the goal is to make certain that only users who genuinely intend to provide this "extraordinary level of access" can actually grant it.
Why the Shift Now?#
AI agents pose a distinctive threat because of their ability to act autonomously and interact with system resources at scale. Unlike traditional applications that typically need permission for specific tasks, autonomous AI systems could potentially abuse full disk access to scan, modify, or exfiltrate sensitive data without meaningful user oversight. Apple views this risk as substantial enough to warrant tightening controls that have remained largely unchanged in recent years.
