Anthropic Merges Claude Chat and Cowork Into Single Unified Interface
The company is consolidating its fragmented Claude products into one conversation space, removing the friction of choosing between different modes for different tasks.
The New Stack
Anthropic has decided to eliminate the friction of deciding which Claude product to use. Starting this week, the platform merges its Chat and Cowork interfaces into a single, unified space where users can handle everything from simple queries to complex multi-step projects with tools, background execution, and file access all within one conversation.
Alongside this consolidation, Anthropic is introducing Claude Docs and Claude Slides in beta for paid subscribers, while folding Claude Design—previously a standalone workspace—directly into conversations. The shift reflects user feedback that the core problem wasn't what each tool could do, but rather the burden of figuring out where each task belonged.
The Problem With Separation#
Anthropic launched both Cowork and Design earlier this year as specialized environments: Cowork for agent-driven, multi-step work and Design for visual output. While both gained adoption, users repeatedly complained about the decision fatigue of choosing between them. The friction ran deeper than mere inconvenience. Context didn't always travel smoothly between modes—notes from a chat session might not appear in Cowork, and starting a Design project often meant re-explaining work you'd just discussed in chat.
Though Anthropic unified its memory system across Chat and Cowork in August, that partial solution didn't address the fundamental issue: users still had to know which tool to open first.
Features Now Unified#
Cowork's capabilities—local file access, multi-step workflows, scheduled tasks, and connected tools—now operate within the conversation itself. Users no longer need to switch contexts to execute complex work. Claude can be configured to continue working independently and check in only when needed, or to schedule recurring tasks like weekly reports to run automatically without manual triggering.
Claude Docs and Claude Slides allow users to create and edit documents and presentations directly within the conversation, building on work already in progress. Users can then edit, present, or export these outputs as PowerPoint or PDF files—eliminating the need to recreate context in separate applications.
Claude Design remains available as a standalone option but is now also accessible directly within conversations, giving users flexibility in how they engage with it.
What Remains Unclear#
Anthropic's announcement sidesteps several open questions. There's no clarity on whether users can force certain requests to remain in simple chat mode, or how such decisions affect context windows and token usage. The rollout appears focused on consumer and team products rather than API changes—platform developers will need to wait for further guidance.
