New Benchmark Reveals Major Gaps in How AI Models Follow Complex Logic Instructions
Researchers introduce LogicIF, a benchmark that exposes critical weaknesses in large language models when tasked with instructions involving conditional logic, loops, and function calls.
A team of researchers has unveiled LogicIF, a benchmark designed to test how well leading large language models can follow instructions containing sophisticated logical structures. The findings paint a sobering picture: today's most advanced LLMs still fail to correctly execute instructions with even moderately complex logic.
The Problem#
Instruction following has become foundational to modern LLMs, enabling capabilities from basic task completion to reasoning and autonomous behavior. Yet as instructions grow more complicated—featuring conditional statements, loops, nested function calls, and other logic constructs—LLMs' performance begins to deteriorate significantly. Despite this being a critical capability, the extent of this weakness has received surprisingly little investigation.
How LogicIF Works#
The researchers created an automated framework called LogicIFGen that translates code functions into verifiable natural language instructions. This approach allows for systematic generation of logic-rich tasks that maintain mathematical precision—a key advantage over manually written benchmarks. Using this framework, they assembled LogicIFEval, a test set containing 426 carefully constructed instructions based on curated code functions.
The benchmark captures real-world complexity: conditions that branch execution paths, loops that iterate with varying constraints, and nested function calls that require multi-step reasoning.
The Results#
Testing across current state-of-the-art models reveals a striking pattern: most leading LLMs achieve accuracy below 60% on LogicIFEval instructions. This gap suggests that instruction-following ability—despite being central to LLM alignment and behavior—remains a significant unresolved challenge in the field.
Why It Matters#
These findings highlight a fundamental limitation in how today's models process and execute structured information expressed in natural language. As AI systems are deployed in higher-stakes domains where logical precision matters, addressing this weakness becomes increasingly urgent. The LogicIF benchmark provides researchers with a concrete, verifiable way to measure progress on this critical problem. Code and materials are publicly available for further research.
