Cursor launches budget India subscription ahead of SpaceX takeover
The AI coding platform rolls out ₹649-a-month pricing for its third-largest market as global tech firms race to capture developer demand.

Weeks before completing its $60 billion acquisition by SpaceX, Cursor is doubling down on India with a country-specific subscription tier—marking the startup's most aggressive push yet into one of the world's largest developer ecosystems.
On Monday, Cursor unveiled Cursor Start, a ₹649-monthly plan (roughly $7) engineered for Indian developers. The offering sits significantly below Cursor's standard $20-a-month Pro subscription and represents the company's first foray into localized global pricing.
Why India matters#
India has become a linchpin in Cursor's growth strategy. The startup already ranks India as its third-largest market globally, with a user base that more than tripled in the past year. More tellingly, the country hosts a disproportionately high share of Cursor's power users—developers who rely most intensively on the platform.
The numbers underscore India's clout in software development. GitHub reported earlier this year that over 27 million developers use its platform in India, second only to the United States. The country added more than two million new developers in 2026 alone, signaling explosive momentum.
Simon Green, Cursor's head of Asia-Pacific and Japan, framed the India move as a chance to align pricing with regional realities. "We felt that we had an opportunity there to right-size the commercial model and drive scale," he told TechCrunch. "The technical competency of the country and the engineering talent that already exists make it a very natural fit."
What's included in Cursor Start#
The new tier gives developers access to Cursor's Composer 2.5 model and Grok 4.5, along with cloud agents, iOS support, plugins, and Model Context Protocol features. Compared to the free tier, subscribers get substantially higher usage limits—appealing to serious developers who don't need Cursor's full enterprise arsenal.
The trade-off: unlike the Pro tier, Start excludes frontier models from OpenAI and Anthropic, plus premium features like Bugbot, Auto Mode, and the Cursor SDK. This positioning allows Cursor to maintain a clear tier separation while broadening accessibility.
Payments flow through credit and debit cards, as well as India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI), the nation's homegrown digital payment system. Cursor plans geo-verification measures, including VPN deterrents, to restrict Start to Indian residents only.
