Airbnb's AI-powered development cuts feature launch time by 60%
The company is shipping features 80% faster this year by leaning on AI for code generation and product development, while cautiously testing consumer-facing AI search.
TechCrunch — AI
Airbnb is using artificial intelligence to dramatically accelerate its product development cycle. During the company's second-quarter earnings call, CEO Brian Chesky revealed that AI has slashed the time needed to move from initial concept to shipping a feature by as much as 60%, while the company has increased its feature output by nearly 80% compared to the same period last year.
How AI is speeding up development#
The acceleration stems from AI's role in code generation—the company disclosed earlier this year that AI now produces roughly 60% of its new code. This extends beyond back-end infrastructure: Airbnb has applied AI-assisted development to critical workflows including search functionality, user registration, checkout processes, and payment systems. For hosts, the company has also deployed AI to streamline onboarding and support functions.
Testing AI search with user choice#
While Airbnb has historically moved cautiously with consumer-facing AI features—limiting rollouts to review summaries and listing highlights—the company is now testing a new AI-powered search capability. Rather than forcing the change on users accustomed to traditional filters, Airbnb is offering a toggle that lets customers opt into a natural-language search experience. Users can type conversational queries and receive visually formatted results, with AI-generated titles and real-time personalized descriptions that feel more like browsing with a chatbot than traditional search.
Chesky has previously resisted adopting generic chatbot interfaces for travel use cases, instead focusing AI development on search, discovery, and support workflows where it can provide tangible value.
Support automation driving cost savings#
Behind the scenes, customer support has become one of Airbnb's heaviest AI deployment areas. The company launched an AI customer service agent in North America in 2025 and has since expanded it to support over 50 languages, with voice call support planned for later in 2026. The impact is measurable: nearly 45% of customer issues initiated with the AI agent are now resolved without human intervention, allowing the company to reduce support costs per booking by 16% year-over-year.
Strong quarterly performance#
Airbnb's second quarter ended on a high note, with revenue climbing 17% year-over-year to $3.6 billion and adjusted EBITDA jumping 21% to $1.3 billion.
