Ford to integrate Apple Maps into new electric vehicles, expanding autonomous driving capabilities
Apple's mapping service will power navigation and advanced driver-assist features across Ford's upcoming universal EV platform launching in 2027.
The Verge
Ford has selected Apple Maps as the navigation backbone for its emerging Universal Electric Vehicle Platform, marking a significant partnership between the automotive and technology giants. The integration will debut in an affordable midsize electric pickup truck arriving in 2027, priced around $30,000.
What's included in the partnership#
The collaboration brings several capabilities to Ford's vehicles. The Apple Maps system will deliver turn-by-turn navigation using conversational language commands, live traffic updates, incident alerts, and intelligent search with detailed location information. Drivers will also gain access to EV-specific routing that accounts for charging stations and optimal paths for battery efficiency, plus battery preconditioning features that prepare the vehicle's power systems for different driving conditions.
Notably, the Apple Maps experience works standalone within Ford vehicles—users won't need an iPhone to access these features, though Apple's CarPlay remains available as an alternative.
Upgrading autonomous driving features#
Ford is collaborating with Apple to develop the next iteration of its BlueCruise hands-free driving assistant. The new system will tap into Apple Maps' detailed road-level data to enable highway automation from on-ramp to off-ramp, removing the need for human steering on controlled routes.
Beyond BlueCruise, Ford's Latitude AI division continues advancing a separate fully autonomous driving system that will operate without requiring driver oversight. That technology is expected to reach deployment readiness by 2028.
Strategic timing#
The announcements underscore Ford's push to make electric vehicles more accessible and their integrated platforms more sophisticated. By embedding Apple's mapping infrastructure directly into the vehicle's operating system rather than relying on smartphone mirroring, Ford aims to deliver a seamless, purpose-built navigation and driving experience.
