Agentic AI
Why infrastructure data quality matters for AI agents
Organizations deploying AI agents to manage infrastructure must first establish a unified, continuously updated data model to avoid costly automation failures.
The New Stack
AI agents are increasingly being deployed to manage infrastructure—automating provisioning, healing networks, and server deployments without human intervention. But there's a critical catch: agents are only as reliable as the data they receive.
The data problem
Most enterprise infrastructure lives across fragmented, siloed systems: separate tools for IP address management, data center inventory, device configuration, and more. Over 70% of industry leaders identified this fragmentation as a core bottleneck. Without a complete and accurate picture of the network, AI agents "will make confident mistakes"—mistakes that in infrastructure can mean exposed databases, failed deployments, and business-wide outages.
Infrastructure intelligence as the foundation
According to NetBox Labs CEO Kris Beevers, the solution is an infrastructure intelligence platform: a unified, continuously updated model that captures not just what exists on the network, but what's intended, what's changed, and what needs attention. This comprises three layers:
- System of record: A living representation of both intended state (what should be) and operational state (what actually is), tracking the drift between them
- Full infrastructure context: Connecting intent, design, and operations in a single data thread, so teams and agents have complete answers without switching between tools
- Guardrails: Audit trails, change management, and operational validation that prevent both human and AI errors before they cascade
Agentic infrastructure operations
NetBox Labs recently expanded its platform to be agent-native, adding Model Context Protocol (MCP) server extensions, pre-built agent skills, and new validation tools. These tools help agents self-correct, validate changes for safety and compliance, and access NetBox Data Exchange—the company's large-scale infrastructure metadata database.
"The future isn't just autonomous infrastructure. It's trustworthy infrastructure," Beevers said, emphasizing that "giving AI agents access to production infrastructure without guardrails is a recipe for outages."
