Google Transitions Gemini CLI Users to New Antigravity Platform
Google is consolidating its terminal and development tools under Antigravity, a new agent-first platform designed for multi-agent workflows, ending support for Gemini CLI on June 18, 2026 for most users.
Google Developers Blog (AI)
Google announced a significant shift in its developer tools strategy, migrating users from Gemini CLI to Antigravity CLI, a new terminal interface built into Google Antigravity, its agent-first development platform.
Why the transition?#
Gemini CLI, launched in 2025, proved popular with over 100,000 GitHub stars and thousands of contributors. However, user needs have evolved. According to Google, developers now require multiple agents working together to handle complex problems—a capability that demands a unified backend across terminal and desktop environments.
What's changing#
Effective June 18, 2026:
- Gemini CLI will stop serving free-tier and Google AI Pro/Ultra users
- Gemini Code Assist IDE extensions will similarly cease support for individual and free accounts
- GitHub integration for new Gemini Code Assist installations will end
What stays intact: Antigravity CLI preserves the core features developers rely on—Agent Skills, Hooks, Subagents, and Extensions (rebranded as plugins)—while adding new capabilities.
Key improvements in Antigravity CLI#
- Built in Go for faster, more responsive execution
- Asynchronous workflows allowing background agent orchestration without freezing your terminal
- Unified architecture shared with Antigravity 2.0 desktop app, ensuring consistent agent improvements across platforms
Who's unaffected#
Organizations using Gemini CLI through Standard or Enterprise licenses, or accessing it via Google Cloud paid API keys, will maintain uninterrupted service. These users will continue receiving updates and access to the latest Gemini models.
Antigravity CLI is available now, with video walkthroughs coming in the coming weeks.
