Study Maps the Value and Controversy of ISTQB Software Testing Certifications
A new AI-assisted academic review examines why ISTQB certifications dominate global software testing while remaining contested among practitioners.
A recent study from arXiv's Software Engineering category takes a hard look at the International Software Testing Qualifications Board (ISTQB) certification—the world's most widely recognized testing qualification, with over 1.2 million certifications issued across more than 130 countries.
The research, published March 2026 and revised in June, conducted an AI-assisted multivocal literature review combining academic papers and grey literature to capture both practitioner endorsements and criticisms of ISTQB certifications.
What practitioners value#
On the positive side, testers and hiring managers cite clear benefits: career advancement, improved communication across teams, and shared industry terminology. These tangible career benefits have driven ISTQB's global adoption and remain a major draw for candidates.
The criticisms#
However, a significant contingent of practitioners challenges the certification's relevance. Key critiques include:
- Excessive theoretical focus at the expense of hands-on testing skills
- Poor alignment with agile methodologies and modern automation-heavy workflows
- Disconnect from real-world testing challenges practitioners face daily
The researchers brought in a panel of four independent experts to validate their findings. The review confirmed that while many endorsements were accurate, several criticisms pointed to deeper tensions within the testing discipline—reflecting genuine philosophical divides about what constitutes good testing practice.
Bottom line#
The study concludes that ISTQB certifications deliver measurable value in career mobility and standardized communication. Yet they remain contested on practical utility, suggesting the certification body could benefit from closer alignment with contemporary testing approaches like agile and test automation.
