OpenAI brings visual ads to ChatGPT image-generation feed
The company is rolling out display advertisements alongside generated images in a push to monetize its free-tier user base.
TechCrunch — AI
OpenAI is expanding its advertising footprint by introducing visual display ads that will appear next to images users generate through ChatGPT. The move marks the company's latest effort to build an ad-supported revenue model for its free and discounted subscription tiers.
Rolling out this month#
The new visual ads will debut later this month in the United States, starting with a select group of advertisers testing the format. OpenAI emphasizes that the ads will be clearly marked and won't alter or bias ChatGPT's responses to user queries. The rollout comes as the company seeks to make advertising a more meaningful part of its business strategy.
Expanding ad infrastructure#
Beyond the image-focused ads, OpenAI is strengthening its advertising platform through several measures. The company has broadened its measurement partnerships to include services like AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, and others that help track user engagement and conversion metrics. It's also collaborating with measurement firms such as Fospha and Measured to support more sophisticated campaign analysis across the full customer journey.
OpenAI has enlisted DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science to develop brand-safety evaluation tools, giving advertisers greater confidence about where their ads will appear within ChatGPT's environment.
The bigger picture#
The advertising push is designed to capitalize on ChatGPT's massive audience—the platform reaches approximately 1.2 billion users weekly. Wider global availability of these ads could eventually give marketers direct access to that user base. The company introduced ads earlier this year and expanded them to India in August.
The move also reflects competitive pressure: Meta's newly launched Muse is gaining traction as a free, AI-powered alternative to ChatGPT. By making the free tier more ad-heavy, OpenAI may also nudge users toward paid subscriptions to escape advertisements entirely.
