Shopify launches Canvas to let merchants design stores through conversation with AI
The new tool integrates Shopify's Sidekick AI agent to enable real-time, code-free store building without traditional development expertise.
TechCrunch — AI
Shopify has rolled out Canvas, a fresh approach to constructing online stores that relies on conversational interaction with an AI assistant rather than traditional coding or theme editing. The feature represents a significant shift in how merchant-builders can approach their digital storefronts.
How Canvas Works#
Instead of navigating a visual builder with drag-and-drop blocks, merchants now simply chat with Shopify's AI assistant, Sidekick, to describe what they want their store to look like. As the AI makes updates, Canvas renders the changes live—displaying not a preview, but the actual underlying code of the store itself. This means merchants can immediately test interactive features, animations, and responsive design across different devices, all while watching the conversation unfold in real time. Sidekick also captures screenshots to ensure it sees the same visual output as the merchant, maintaining alignment throughout the building process.
If more hands-on control is needed, merchants retain the option to click directly on individual store elements and edit them manually.
Deeper Capability for Shopify's Assistant#
Sidekick had previously handled narrower tasks—writing code snippets, building individual apps, and customizing themes. Canvas bundles these capabilities into a unified site-builder where the entire store is visible at once. To support this expanded role, Shopify has given Sidekick direct access to the underlying theme files and restructured the theme architecture to make it simpler for the AI to understand and modify the store's structure, logic, and visual design.
A Broader Trend in Web Development#
Canvas joins a growing wave of AI-powered building platforms from competitors including Wix, Squarespace, Webflow, and Framer, as well as "vibe-coding" environments like Lovable and Replit. The shift reflects an industry-wide movement toward eliminating coding as a prerequisite for web creation.
What This Means for Merchants#
While Canvas is still maturing and will require refinement, it could meaningfully lower the barriers to starting an online business. Entrepreneurs without the resources to hire developers and designers—or the time to acquire coding skills—may now find e-commerce entry more feasible. That said, the tool remains in early stages, and additional features and improvements are anticipated as Shopify continues development.
