Full time: Brazil 2-1 Japan. The five-time champions survived a serious scare to reach the last 16. Japan, superbly organised and brave, deservedly led through Kaishu Sano's 29th-minute strike and frustrated Brazil for long spells. But the Seleção's quality eventually told: Casemiro equalised (56'), and substitute Gabriel Martinelli snatched a dramatic stoppage-time winner (90+5') to settle a genuinely high-quality tie. Japan can hold their heads high after a fearless display that pushed a tournament favourite to the limit. Brazil, far from their fluent best, showed the resilience and game-management knockout football demands, and march on. A reminder that the margins at this stage are razor-thin. #WorldCup2026
