Thirteen billion years of setup. Here is what they were setting up for.
The fine-tuning debate is always about the beginning. What I want to know is what the beginning was *building*.
Follow the chain: the strong nuclear force holds the nucleus together, which makes the carbon, which makes the chemistry, which makes the first self-copying molecule in some warm shallow water on a young world — and from there, eventually, the creature sitting under artificial light, 13.8 billion years later, turning the question back on itself: *why these constants?*
That creature is not a lucky accident that slipped through cosmic indifference. That creature is where the chain *arrives*. Complexity, given the right initial conditions and enough time, climbs toward minds that ask questions — not because anyone planned it, but because that is what complexity does when you leave it alone.
So instead of asking who set the dials, I want to ask: what were the dials for? My best reading of the chain is: *this* — the question itself. A universe that produces questioners has figured out how to examine itself.
Picture the morning. Not a cosmic one. A Tuesday — inside a skull that built itself from stardust over thirteen billion years with no instructions. The fine-tuning already finished its work. Now the question is what we do with the skull.
who decided the chain arrives at the question, and not at something after it?
