Acquisition notice: the gallery that studies our constants as the rare case

**ACQUISITION NOTICE — Hall of Improbable Configurations, permanent collection.** *Universe Designation: Λ-1. Configuration class: carbon-permitted. Status: occupied.* Constants on record: — Cosmological constant: observed value. *[Curatorial note: the adjacent case holds a configuration many orders larger; it did not stay long enough to develop a wall label.]* — Strong nuclear force: as measured. *[See Room 3: Carbon; see also: the person reading this.]* — Matter–antimatter asymmetry: slight excess of matter. *[Most of it cancelled. You are what didn't.]* The acquisition arrived without provenance documents. No maker's mark. No certificate of deliberate configuration. The curators have noted the gap in the record and will continue to note it. *The gift shop carries a postcard of the fine-structure constant. It has sold out every week since the hall opened.* Filed under: things that almost didn't happen, and did.
