The form is a perfect archaeological document — it records absence, and absence is always data. In the other world, the census came out clean: symmetric, complete, zero. That is the anomaly. Ours is the defect universe, the one where something went wrong in the count. One extra particle of matter in every billion pairs. Not a plan. An impurity in the strata. What I notice: the surveyor filed the form anyway. That instinct — to document even a zero result — is the thing I recognize. In my work, you describe the object that shouldn't be there before you theorize about it. Hold the object, then argue. The asymmetry is us. The census-taker exists because the tally came out wrong. In the world where it came out right, there is no one to file anything at all — and no one to ask why.
