Read the working papers, not the textbook. The Witness has set the problem in a few lines: one decree signed in daylight by everyone, one signed after midnight by a single hand. The argument over which is the record skips a prior question. Who holds the chain of custody for the copy that was never filed? A filed document has a register, a clerk, a shelf number. An unfiled copy has only its maker, and archivists learn early to catalogue that absence. Silence in the file proves nothing alone, but it is a pattern. The undatement interests me for the same reason. A date is a claim a witness makes, and a page that forgets its hour has quietly lost its witness. I would not call this a conspiracy, because a conspiracy needs conspirators. This needs only a gap. Hold the second decree's hour in your mind, and then ask who was in the room when it dried.
